COMMENTS FROM RUNNERS

"Such an amazing marathon weekend... Everything was absolutely perfect! From the t-shirts, to the pasta dinner, the markings on the course to keep us on track, the amazing volunteers, my trophy, the after party, and I could just keep going on. I stayed at Bahia hostel and they were so accommodating.... I also got some great prizes at the raffle- an awesome fanny pack and a polo from a boutique. And my prize dinner at Cafe Cafe was delicious! I shared the two plates with everyone else and they agreed it was the best chifa we'd had in Peru."

SHANNON DORAN

"It was great to feel so welcomed by the parade, and to see probably most of the people from the small towns that we ran through come out to give us high fives and encouragement as we ran through their towns.  The race was one of the most scenic races I have participated in, for an excellent price that included just as many ammenities as any organized race in the United States
(many fruit/powerade/water/snack stations spread out through the entirity of the race, great markings directing the runners, bathrooms, emergency
assistance available, the T-shirt and goody bags, the pre-race pasta dinner, the list goes on).  It was such a fantastic experience, and there is no other place I would have rather run my first marathon."

ERIN

"I had a great weekend in Pacasmayo! Everything was so well organized...very impressive. I only  ran/walked to 5K, but everyone's enthusiam combined with the great organization has already motivated me to RUN at least the 10K next year."

KAREN MAYER

"The second annual Pacasmayo International Marathon was a lot of fun and a great success as far as I saw. This year everything seemed more organized and professional. I personally had a blast. It was very enjoyable getting to see old friends and make new ones and it allowed Peace Corps Volunteers and the locals of Pacasmayo to work together to achieve a very large goal. Not to mention the fact that I'm always happy when I get to visit Pacasmayo."

Brad, Peace Corps Volunteer in Peru

"The marathon weekend was one of our most exciting experiences in Peru thus far. This is the first marathon either Milene or I have ever participated in, and you have set the bar high--from the scenic course, to the excellent detailed-oriented organization, to the great prize giveaway, to the awesome after-party. Having trained for, but not been able to actually run the race, I was super jealous of all those runners (including Milene) who looked like they were having a blast. It motivated me to come back with a vengeance next year!

We have all said at some time that we would run somewhere different ... elsewhere in the world that is beautifully unique ... where local people are friendly and genuinely glad to see you ... where hospitality comes from the heart and feel immediately at home ... and where the climate throughout the year is pleasantly close to perfection.

This place is waiting and call Pacasmayo, Peru.

The next time you wish to check a place that is different than all your past adventures, why not consider this hidden gem.

Great event with 100% local spectator support in some of the tiniest villages in Peru!!! Perfect weather (always in Peru) and great course markings for a route that was very creative and took us through villages, coastal areas, and the beach front in Pacasmayo, twice. There was always an aid station within a few miles, replete with great food and cheering volunteers! While 30-40% of this marathon may have been on asphalt, the other gravel, dirt, sand portions made it truly unique, never boring and always fun to run. And, starting all 4 races (5K, 10K, 21K, 42K) at the same time worked out great and kept people of different runs on the same course for even more support as they completed their out portion and turned around to head back to the start/finish line. Everyone's local stone carving medallion was beautiful and gave us a chance to see the artists at work in Peru. Walking as a parade of runners through town the evening before was brilliant, allowing us to form camaraderie between runners and locals, and all of the townspeople were cheering and enjoying the dancers and music that accompanied us. Nice job. Thanks to all of the course organizers, volunteers and spectators, this was a great run full of good news around every corner.

The people of Pacasmayo made us feel so welcome.  Francisco, one of the race organisers,

kindly drove us over part of the course that I would run the following day.  When we

proceeded off road in his 4WD I realised my race plan and time splits were to be discarded!

When they claim it is the most challenging off road marathon in South America, they mean

it.

Race morning arrived, a beautiful day with a strong northerly wind blowing.  Just 16 km of

the 42km course was run on sealed road, with the remainder a mixture of stony desert, sand

and graded dirt roads.  We passed through a number of small towns, local people hung in

their doorways and offered words of encouragement (in spanish!) as we ran by.  The 20km or

so of headwind slowed the pace considerably, the uneven surface stressed the joints ,

though it kept the mind occupied!

Passing back through Pacasmayo at the 28km mark was fabulous, seeing Glen, Zali and

Harrison there cheering me on, and knowing that only 14km remained.  It was to be the most

brutal part of the course, but also the most rewarding.  Running isolated along the coast

of the Pacific Ocean across desert with no one in sight except the occassional fisherman,

and the wonderful volunteers at the drinks tables every few kilometers.  Every step hurt

but the words of support from everyone echoed in my head and my thoughts were with Mark.

He had been here in Pacasmayo on one of his many trips to Peru.  This was for him, and for

others suffering now as he had.

To round the corner out of the desert into the town of Pacasmayo once again and run down

the hill toward my family was a truly satisfying feeling.  After the race, we placed "roses

in the ocean" for Mark ... our way of remembering and honouring him with Zali and Harrison.

That night, the moon smiled down on us, and on Pacasmayo.

thank you so much for your support
